Feis Rois Group Music

Hello from Fèis Rois:

Through the Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI) Fèis Rois has been working in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council since 2012 delivering a vibrant programme of traditional music in schools throughout the region. This resource, Time to Seinn (Time to Sing), has been produced to help support and enhance the learning of Traditional, Scots and Gaelic songs in schools.

With the sheet music, song words, class activities and a CD we hope teachers find this resource useful in bringing Scottish culture alive in the classroom.

We are very grateful to Clàrsach player, Singer and YMI music tutor, Wendy Stewart for her expertise and time collating all the material for this book and to herself, Emily Smith and Maggie MacDonald for their involvement and enthusiasm in the recording of the CD and song arrangements. A special thanks to Jamie McClennan for all of his hard work and dedication in recording, editing and producing this CD, as well as his performances and musical arrangements on the CD. We would also like to thank Alex Douglas and his class at Sanquhar primary for the use of their recording of The Kings Shilling; one of the songs they learnt from Emily and Jamie during the traditional YMI visits.

With special thanks

Fèis Rois would like to thank the following people for giving their very kind permission for the use of their music and lyrics:

  • Matt McGinn’s Estate (Coorie Doon)
  • Ian Sinclair and Saffron Summerfield from Mother Earth Music (The Kings Shilling)
  • Wendy Stewart (Fires at Midnight)
  • Aidan Smith for the use of his fathers W Gordon Smith song (Come by the Hills)
  • Emily Smith (music for Helen of Kirkconnel)

This resource would not have been possible without all of these invaluable contributions.

We hope you enjoy learning all these songs!
